Rutgers Newark - Smart Classrooms
This Manual applies to all of the SmartClassrooms in the Newark Campus except
for; Engelhard-
209 & 211;
and Smith-220
)
These Smart Classrooms are equipped with a projector, a PC with Internet
connection,
a VCR and a document camera. It also has a connector for a laptop, should a
instructor
decide to bring in and use their own laptops.
The Podium
The podium has a combination lock system. The combination for the lock will
be provided
to Instructors, during their classroom orientation.

The equipment Control Pad is mounted on the Podium Control Panel along with the
Laptop Video and Audio Connect cables and Network Jack. |

This
system control pad has select buttons for each device available in the room.
Also on the pad is the audio volume control knob, which is used to control the audio volume
of the device selected. |
Turning the system On/Off:
Turning On the system starts with the Projector. It is the heart of the system. To turn the unit on,
simply press
the Power button momentarily. To turn it Off. Press and hold down the Power button
for approximately 3-seconds, till the message "Please Wait A
Little" pops up at the bottom of the
screen. The projector will then shutdown within a few minutes.
* Please Do not forget to shutdown the projector when done.
To project output from any of the devices onto the screen, simply turn the
corresponding unit
on and, press the appropriate button on the control pad.
For example. To show a video, you will first turn on power to the Projector. Then the VCR, by pressing
its
power on button, insert the tape, Press the VCR button on the control pad then, press play
on the VCR. Use the control knob to adjust the audio output level.
The PC
The PC in the system is a Dell with Windows 2000. It has the latest version of
Microsoft Office,
which includes Microsoft
Word, Powerpoint, Access and Excel. It has a CD/DVD Player,
a ZIP-100 drive and has internet access. It has both Netscape and Internet Explorer
for browsing.
To use, simply turn it on and use like a regular pc. Select Podium PC on the
control panel to
direct it's audio and video outputs to the projector and room sound system.
Our larger rooms have recently been equipped with wireless lavalier
microphones and handheld
remote PC controls to assist in presenting from the podium PC.
The Laptop
A professor who wishes to use their own Laptop Computer can connect their
Laptop to the
system by connecting the VGA and audio cables (laptop connect cables), from the podium
to their Laptop's
VGA and audio outputs.
Press the laptop button to select the Laptop video and audio outputs for
projection on the
screen.
If you want to access the Internet through
your laptop during your
class, you will need
to have a network card in your Laptop, and you will need to
have it's network settings
re-configured for Network &
Internet access. Please let me know a few weeks ahead of time
if you need to do
this so that we can make the appropriate arrangements.
Professors with their Laptops configured for the network can plug the network
cable from
their Laptop to the Network Jack on the panel and access the Internet.
