Conklin-449 Classroom Overview

The Conklin-449 ITV/Smart Classroom is a classroom equipped with a V-Tel Lc-3000 Video-Conferencing system,
which allows the classroom to connect with similarly equipped classrooms for an interactive session through our ATM
network.

Also included are various multimedia equipment to be used as teaching aids and or tools to deliver a content rich class.

The equipment installed includes 2-VCR's one for playback one for recording. A DVD player, document camera, a
Networked PC with Internet access, and loaded with Microsoft Office '97 which includes Powerpoint, Acces, Excel,
and Word.
 
Control to any of the equipment is through the touch screen mounted on the right side of the podium.

*Access to the classroom is currently limited to trained Faculty & Staff.
 



How to Use the Room For Video-conferencing (ITV) activities
* Access to the room is issued only to trained faculty and staff who has a regularly scheduled class.
1. Turn on the system by touching the touch panel twice. Once to activate the panel and the second time to turn
the system on. This turns on the front and rear TV screens along with all its support equipment.
2. On the touch Panel display bottom bar, touch the A/V Mode button to OFF (see “AV Mode On/Off”
screen shot
) and then select any of the Sources on the left bar of the touch panel display to activate the selected video
source. (ie; Presenter camera)
3. Put on the wireless microphone/follow-me camera tracking device around your neck. Clip the transmitter on your
belt or carry it in your pocket. Slide the two switches to the on position to turn on the device.

4. Turn on the classroom mics. On the touch Panel display, right bar, touch the Mics button to display "Mics on"

5. Connect to the remote site. On the touch Panel display bottom bar, touch the V-tel Controls button. The display will
change to the V-tel dial up menu where your remote site dial-in number will have been programmed into. Touch the
appropriate button for your remote site to connect.

6. When the remote site is connected you will see them on both front and rear screens. Insure that your audio levels
are ok. On the touch Panel display, right bar, touch the arrow up, or down buttons to raise or lower the incoming
audio from the remote site. 

7. During your video-conference you may use any of the devices in the podium to express your ideas. You may:

Play a video tape,
            Display an overhead slide or objects with the graphics camera
            Play CD-music or a DVD-movie from the DVD-player
   
         Display Powerpoint presentations or internet web content from the pc.
   
         Record you session for future viewing, lectures or content development.

8. Remember to disconnect the call and shutdown the system when your session is over. To disconnect your call press the
disconnect button on the V-tel controls menu, and System Off followed by "OK" to shutdown the system.



How to use the classroom as a smart classroom
1. Turn on the system by touching the touch panel twice. Once to activate the panel and the second time to turn the

bottom bar, touch the A/V Mode button to ON and then select any of the Sources on the left bar of the touch panel display
to activate the selected mode. (ie; PC) 3. During your class you may use any of the devices in the podium to express your
ideas. You may:
    
                   Play a video tape,
                   Display an overhead slide or objects with the graphics camera
                   Play music CD or a DVD-movie from the DVD-player
                   Display Powerpoint presentations or internet web content from the PC.
                   Record your session for future viewing, lectures or content development.

4. Remember to shutdown the system when your session is over. On the touch panel display bottom bar, touch the System
Off button followed by OK to acknowledge system shutdown. This will shutdown the system. See System OFF screen

Using the various classroom devices.
1. PC (A) - The Classroom PC is located in the bottom left cabinet of the podium. Select its' video to be displayed by
touching the PC button which is midway on the left menu bar labeled Sources, on the touch panel display.
2. Laptop (B) -To use your own laptop, connect the VGA cable tucked right under the PC monitor to the VGA output
port of your Laptop. Then, touch the PC button which is midway on the left menu bar labeled Sources, on the touch panel
display.
3. VCR - To display video using the VCR insert your videocassette into the Playback VCR in the bottom right cabinet of
the podium. Select PB VCR, under the sources bar at the left of the display panel. Press Play on the display panel or on
the VCR. Adjust the audio volume levels using the volume buttons on the right side of the display panel.
4. Graphics Camera - to use the graphics camera, also referred to as a digitizer or, document camera. Power the unit on
by pressing the on switch at the left rear of the unit. Simply place your document, transparency or object on top of the unit.
Select Graphics Camera from the Sources column at the left of the display panel to display. Focus, Zoom in/out functions,
can be controlled either from the touch panel menu or the unit itself. One can also select B/W, Color or, Negative display
mode through switch settings on the unit itself. The Base and Top lamps can be turned on at the unit front switches.
5. DVD - Open the DVD disk tray. Insert a CD or DVD disk and close the tray. Select DVD from the left menu bar
Sources menu. A new menu screen will pop up on the touch panel display offering the various choices of controls to play,
skip, forward ..etc. for the DVD.6. Record VCR  - The Record VCR, like the playback VCR is a regular VCR like the
ones you have at home. To record insert your video tape in the VCR and press the record button. It will record all of the
audio in the room and the video displayed on the large monitors.

Presenter Camera
The Presenter Camera has the sole function of capturing the video image of the presenter/instructor for transmission to the
remote sites. Together with a specially designed wireless microphone it has the capability  to follow the presenter as he or
she walks around in the room without any other outside assistance.

Preset 1 - 6 - 6 User selectable camera presets set with different presenter camera shots within the room.

Auto 1 - 4 -
4 Auto follow, camera settings used in conjunction with the presenter camera's follow me feature. Each
setting is different from the other in the way it frames the presenter.

Zoom In/Out - Zooms the picture In or Out

Up, Down, Left, Right Arrow Buttons - moves the camera manually up , down, left or right.

Store -allows the newly selected settings to be stored into one of the 6 presets.

Return
Returns you back to the previous menu.


 


The Student Camera

The Student Camera has the function of capturing the video image of the class and individual students, for transmission to the remote sites. Preset at a wide class overview shot, it accepts camera movement commands from the control panel and from the tabletop mics mounted in front of every 2-students. The tabletop microphones' my-turn button when pressed directs the student camera to focus on their location as they speak. Note that the my turn function must be enabled at the control panel.

My Turn - Toggles to enable or disable the my turn camera function. My Turn function works in conjunction with the tabletop microphones My turn buttons.

Zoom In/Out - Zooms the picture In or Out

Store - allows the newly selected settings to be stored into one of the 6 presets.

ReturnReturns you back to the previous menu.



The Graphics Camera

The Graphics Camera is the 90's version of the overhead projector. It is capable of displaying anything from slides to, transparencies, plain paper documents, books etc. It is a camera mounted on a deck equipped with overhead and base lights, fully zoom-able with B/W, Color or negative display modes.

The Graphics Camera functions can be controlled from either the touch screen or from the control buttons directly on the unit.

Zoom In/Out – Zooms the picture in or out.

Internal- (Default operating mode) Selects the camera input as the source.

Input 1 & 2 – Selects one of the 2 external inputs as the source 

Auto Focus

Upper & Lower Lights -Switches on the upper and or lower (base) lights

Exit – Takes you back to the main screen.



The Playback & Record VCR’s

The Playback and Record VCRs are similar to your standard consumer VCR. They have been integrated into the system to allow the presentation of pre-programmed modules and the recording of the class. The common VCR functions to Play, Record, Pause, Rewind, and Fast Forward a video tape are accessible at the touch panel by pressing the labeled buttons or at the VCR itself.


 

The DVD Player

Pressing on the “DVD”button under the sources column activates the above DVD Control screen. The DVD player can be controlled from this screen. Once activated, you can power the 

Player ON/OFF, Open/Close the tray, Play, Pause, & Stop the player from this screen. Activating this screen automatically switches audio and video data from the DVD Player to the Monitors and the room sound system, and also to the remotes sites during an ITV session.



The V-Tel Controls

The V-Tel Control Screen allows the user to connect with other facilities with similar and compatible video-conferencing equipment through the single press of a button.

Presets – This button group, contains pre-programmed numbers for selected remote sites.

Speed Selection – these buttons allow the selection of desired video-conference transmission rate.

PIP – toggles the Picture In Picture mode to On or Off .

PIP Swap – Selects the displayed video in the PIP screen. Remote or Local video.

Edit Preset Labels – allows the user to edit the preset button labels for easier site identification.

Number Pad – is used to manually dial a remote sites’ access number to establish a video conference. *

Backspace – moves the cursor back one space.

Clear – clears the numbers keyed in the current position

Clear 1&2 – clears the numbers keyed in 1st and 2nd position

Store – allows the user to store the number into one of the preset locations. 

Dial – dials the keyed number.

Disconnect – disconnects the video-conference session. 

Conference Volume – Down/Up raises or lowers the audio levels within the room.

Exit – Exits the current page.




Monitor Display Toggle Normal/Switched

This Button is used to toggle the remote or local video on the large and small monitor.

Normal mode - remote site on large screen

Switched - remote on small screen.



AV Mode On/Off

This button is used to select the room presentation/functionality mode.

AV mode ON – For smart Classroom use. Allows use of all the equipment in the room except video-conferencing capabilities.

AV mode OFF - is for Video-Conferencing mode. Allows the use of all the classroom equipment including the video-conferencing system. 


 

System OFF – press the System OFF button to shutdown the system. This screen is displayed after the System OFF button is pressed to confirm your selection. Press YES to Shutdown
